Olive oil tourism
1 EL CAMI DE MULETA

Distance: 4,8 km

This first walk begins on the Sóller to Deià road (the MA10) at kilometre 56.950. Here you must take a tarmac track that leads to the sea. After a few hundred metres, the track divides, forking left and right at right angles. If you take the left-hand fork, you will come to Béns d''Avall Restaurant, where you can sample dishes made with Mallorcan olive oil and enjoy the superb sea views. On this occasion, however, you must take the right-hand fork and continue along the tarmac track. The tarmac soon gives way to an earth track marked «GR221». Continue along this forest track, which is wide enough for a car, until just before a series of houses called Muleta Gran. The track leading up to the buildings and the area around this estate are full of fascinatingly shaped olive trees. At this point, follow the signs for track GR221 toward the Port of Sóller. The track goes round the buildings until it reaches a little gate, which you should close behind you after you go through it. You then enter Cas Avinyons olive grove and, a few metres further on, you will see Es Camell with its mythological shapes. To the right of the path, close to Es Camell, there are other olive trees of considerable beauty. We should warn you that although the path itself is public, the land where the olive trees stand is private, whether walled off or not. As a result, it is important to respect this private property and not leave anything behind. Continue along the path and go through another little gate. Now the track is a cobblestone one, marked by boundary stones. It descends toward the right, crossing a torrent just before another little gate that you must also go through. Continue along the track and, just five minutes later on the left, you will see a beautiful example of a rural mansion in the mountains known as Muleta de ca s''Hereu or Muleta Petit, which is now a rural hotel (see the section on rural hotels). Here you can get your strength back, sampling dishes made with Mallorcan olive oil. If you visit the olive oil press, you can also find out how olive oil used to be made on the island.
